Reference Field in Sales Orders

Could an option be included where the reference field could be managed so it doesn't use the same text, we currently use this field for sales order numbers. Unfortunately we have experienced duplicates in this where team members do not realise the sales order has already been entered., it would be good for an option to stop duplication.
